I've ticked 'same' for housing and homelessness because I think the money spent on housing benefits mostly ends up subsidising private landlords and propping up already inflated costs of living. If that same amount of money was invested properly in real council houses and social housing then it would probably have a much greater impact than feathering the nests of people who are buying up all the property that would in the past have provided younger people with some chance to get onto the property ladder.

I think the council pays alot more for its senior management than comparable private companies. The same for pensions and other perks. In addition, bring in a room tax for hotels and guest houses throughout York to ensure that tourists help pay for the burden they place on York residents - say £2/day.

Ideally I'd like to see funding increased in all of those areas because providing those services is what councils should be about, and with rising and ageing population it is likely to cost more to do so. I'd also like to see sustainability principles and holistic thinking applied to the provision of services - e.g. investing in public transport, cycling and walking will help improve air quality which improves public health etc. Investing in encouraging people to reduce & reuse as well as recycle may lower recycling rates in the short term but zero waste is the right thing to aim for in order to achieve a circular, resilient economy. Where higher charges are considered, a lower option should be kept for people on low income. Thank you.

This is a vst amount and clearly should be an area where savings could be made, yet it is ignored in your questionnaire, which suggests that you are being unreasonably protective of some interests. For example, parks and open spaces are so vital to everyone's wellbeing and pride in the city, and their budgets are being cut back hugely - the more they go downhill, the less local people will feel motivated to use them and look after them. Efficiency is great, but I think most of the 'efficiency' savings have already been made. At this stage I would much rather the council focused on raising more revenue.

To make an informed decision, we need to be able to see this historical trend of where such services have already been cut in previous years, and proportionally how much they're already being considered for cuts this year. For example, I'm aware that Parks and Open Spaces is facing a 45% cut, so would assert that needs an increase, but I don't know the equivalent context for other services, and most other respondents wouldn't know this service is already facing significant cuts so may not vote accordingly. Hence with very limited context information, this survey isn't a fair representation of public opinion.

The city is not a second home, tourist, cafe culture location, it is a place where people live and work and this needs to be addressed or the slide into mediocrity will continue. There a lot of elderly people in the village who would be housebound without the bus service, Our nearest shops and health centre are in Bishopthorpe which is too far to walk of course. There is the social aspect that people would be cut off from friends and leisure activities. I also have to collect medical supplies for my husband from Clementhorpe regularly which I could not manage unless I took a taxi which would be prohibitively expensive. There is a social side to the actual bus service in that the drivers know their passengers and passengers know each other and this may be the only contact we have with people from the other villages. I would therefore urge you to keep the funding for the 21 bus or even increase it!

This area should be addressed first. One example is the amount of bottles/cans/paper left littering streets after waste collections have been carried out which has then to be cleared up later by council staff. Another example is the state the pavements are left in after new services (e.g fibre boadband) have been installed. This must be costing the council ( tax payer) thousands of pounds to correct. Why not get the installer to do the job correctly. All little and large savings made add up.

Declining public services will make the city a lot less desirable as a place to live and work. It is already clear that services like waste, litter and recycling are under pressure and that the city is looking rather the worse for wear.

York's council tax is one of the lowest already so any freeze will only put us at a further disadvantage compared to other areas in terms of income per head and spend per head. Whilst Silver Street is good, others e.g. Coopergate (mens anyway) has not improved since the charge was levied and is a disgrace to the City as the first 'port of call' many visitors to York will see. It is gloomy, the toilet doors are in a terrible state and use bolts which are stiff etc. to use. Is it going to be upgraded soon?. Then....perhaps 50p might be valid. Staff should be employed at living wage level with informative notices placed in each toilet explaining the costs and why charges are needed. Much better to do this than run them down and then use this as an excuse for closing them. Providing they are maintained I believe most members of the public will eventually support the idea.
